Management of Acute Low Back Pain
A Randomized Clinical Perspective Clinical Study in Spine has reported that a physiotherapy treatment program consisting of exercise therapy is effective at increasing the size of atrophied back muscles. Futhermore, the patients in the Control Group continued to have atrophied muscles at a ten week follow-up even though the subjects were pain-free, suggesting that these patients may be at a higher risk for the recurrence of low back pain.
This is not a rare condition! Eighty percent of the general population will experience low back pain. Low back pain affects 8 in 10 individuals at one time or another in their lives.
Whether you are a blue or white collar worker, a student or homemaker, young or elderly, chances are you’ll experience low back pain.
Causes are varied. The pain may have started when lifting something too heavy or in an awkward way. Often we wake with back pain for no apparent reason, perhaps after sleeping in a poor position or having overworked our back the previous day. We may have been injured while playing our sport, at the gym, or going for our weekend run. Whatever the reason, physiotherapy can help.
At West Vancouver Sports and Orthopedic Physiotherapy, you will undergo a thorough assessment to get to the root of your problem. You will then be given exercises that you can do at home to strengthen your "core", as well as education on proper footwear, posture, and recommendations regarding the use of pillows and your mattress. Remember, low back pain CAN GET BETTER.
